Tons of Trash Removed During 25th Annual White River Cleanup

INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Energy Group, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW), DLZ and Friends of the White River teamed up with hundreds of volunteers today for the 25th annual White River Cleanup.

“Cleaning up the White River is a top priority for our company,” said Carey Lykins, President and CEO of Citizens Energy Group. “We’ve demonstrated that commitment by beginning construction of the Indianapolis Tunnel System to keep raw sewage out of the river. Events like the White River cleanup allow us to demonstrate that commitment on another level, by cleaning up the river’s banks.”

Starting at 8 a.m., volunteers worked on both sides of the river. Areas near Morris Street, Raymond Street and White River Parkway were targeted as part of the cleanup. Work continued until noon and items such as tires, clothing, paint, household waste and medicine were removed from the river’s banks. Over the past 25 years, nearly 1.5 million pounds of trash and debris have been collected during the cleanup.

“It’s amazing to see the impact this cleanup has had on the White River,” said Kevin Hardie, Executive Director of Friends of the White River and 25 year volunteer. “When the event began, it took volunteers nearly eight hours to remove 800 tons of trash. Now, with a quarter of the volunteers needed, it only takes four hours to collect 20 tons of trash.”

The White River Cleanup is made possible thanks to our generous sponsors: United Water, DPW, DLZ, SustainIndy, Friends of the White River, Covanta Energy, Williams Creek Consulting, White River State Park, Critter.com Heritage Environmental Services and the All American Picnic Company.
