Keep Drains Clean This Thanksgiving

INDIANAPOLIS – As you prepare to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast, Citizens Energy Group reminds you that properly disposing of food is just as important as making a delicious meal. Fats, oils and grease (FOG), often found in fried food and baked goods, can cause sewer backups.

"When washed down the sink or drain, FOG builds up and can create blockages which ultimately lead to sewer backups,” said Jamie Dillard, Director of Wastewater Operations at Citizens Energy Group. “When sewer backups occur at your home, they are not only a health hazard, but can cause significant property damage.”

In 2013, more than 150 incidents of sewer backups caused by FOG were reported to Citizens. While the majority of those reports came during the summer months, the problem likely originated during the holiday season when FOG was being washed down sinks and drains. FOG entering the sewer system will flow in a liquid state and then, overtime, solidify and attach to the sewer system’s pipes and joints.

Reducing FOG in our sewers is easy to do and starts at home.

  • Pour fats, oils or grease into a small container. Once it solidifies, place it in the garbage. Grease that doesn’t solidify should be disposed of at an Indianapolis ToxDrop site. For a location, visitwww.indy.gov/ToxDrop.
  • Wipe grease off pots, pans and dishes before washing them.
  • For restaurants or other food preparation establishments, FOG can be a valuable resource as a recyclable. FOG can be sold to rendering companies for use in soaps, fertilizers and animal feed.

Citizens must respond to grease blockages in the sewer in an aggressive manner in order to restore and maintain sewer service. Our response includes removal of FOG blockages and investigating where the FOG originated. This may result in enforcement actions of fines and penalties as well as costs associated with FOG removal and sewer cleaning. For more information about FOG, visit CitizensEnergyGroup.com.
