Help Prevent Street Flooding

INDIANAPOLIS – Steady rain is expected the next few days and Citizens Energy Group reminds residents to clear storm drains on their street. In the fall, the accumulation of leaves can lead to clogged storm drains. These drains carry water from the street to our sewer system and when they become clogged, flooding can occur.
Citizens maintains three thousand miles of sewers throughout Indianapolis and approximately one hundred thousand storm drains. Because Citizens does not have the manpower to clear every storm drain, by city code, this responsibility falls on residents. Clearing storm drains only takes a few minutes and is easy to do.
How to Clear a Storm Drain
  • Rake leaves or grass clippings away from the storm drains near your house or business.
  • Dispose of pet waste in the trash can or toilet. Do not put waste in storm drains.
  • Make sure driveway culverts are free of debris, in good repair and set to proper elevation so water can drain.
Litter can also keep storm drains from functioning properly. Not only is littering unsightly, it is illegal. If you see trash on your street, sidewalk or in your yard, do your part to dispose of it properly. To report street flooding, please call Citizens Energy Group at 924-3311.
