Citizens Water Returns to Normal Disinfectant

INDIANAPOLIS –   Starting Friday, some Citizens Water customers will begin to notice the chlorine odor fading from their tap water. Since early February, free chlorine has been used to disinfect the water system rather than the normal use of chloramines. This temporary change was conducted as an annual preventative maintenance task for additional assurance of the quality of drinking water in the distribution system.  The same process has been done for the past 20 years and is commonly used throughout the drinking water industry.

The maintenance process is now complete and system operations will return to normal. During this period, the tap water was still safe to drink and meet all regulatory standards.

As at all times, customers conducting dialysis treatment or other customers using reverse osmosis systems should verify that their filters are working appropriately for the type of disinfectant used.   In addition, customers with aquaria or sensitive plant species may need to take steps to remove the disinfectant prior to use. Most customers will not need to take any precautions as the water remains safe to drink and is treated according to both state and federal standards.  For more information, contact Citizens Water at 924-3311.
