Citizens Receives Grant to Plan Redevelopment of Coke Plant Site

INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Energy Group announced today it has been awarded a $375,000 grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) to develop a comprehensive strategy to redevelop its former coke manufacturing site on Prospect Street on the southeast side of Indianapolis.
“The EDA POWER Grant is an important step towards developing our strategy to bring together community partners to redevelop the coke plant site for uses that produce good-paying jobs and improved quality of life on the southeast side,” said Jeffrey Harrison, President & CEO of Citizens Energy Group. “We look forward to continue working in a collaborative way with the City of Indianapolis, and a wide range of community groups as we craft a sound redevelopment strategy for the site.”
Mayor Joe Hogsett praised Citizens’ continued commitment to the community as it seeks new uses for the coke plant property. “Today’s announcement is a victory for Indianapolis neighborhoods. With the help of the EDA POWER Grant, the leadership of Citizens Energy Group and the input of countless community and neighborhood organizations, Indianapolis will have the chance to develop a transformational vision for the southeast side of the city. This sort of collaborative approach ensures true community involvement and, ultimately, better economic and redevelopment opportunities for these residents,” said Hogsett.
Among the organizations Citizens is collaborating with on its redevelopment strategy are the Local Initiative Support Corporation, the Indiana Public Policy Institute, Central Indiana Community Foundation, Reconnecting to our Waterways, the John Boner Center, Southeast Neighborhood Development, Southeast Community Services and the Twin Aire Coalition.
Citizens will match the EDA funds with $375,000 to ensure the completion of a year-long study on the best uses of the coke plant property and surrounding parcels. Citizens is in the final stages of demolishing the structures of the coke plant which closed in 2007 due to foreign competition. The utility is also moving forward with an environmental remediation strategy in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM).
