Citizens Prepares for Heavy Rains and Potential Flooding

INDIANAPOLIS – The National Weather Service Predicts Tropical Storm Isaac will be moving into the Indianapolis area this weekend. In order to prepare for severe weather and heavy rain, engineers at Citizens Energy Group are preparing job sites for potential flooding by clearing dirt, trash and construction debris from catch basins and storm drains. These structures can easily become clogged, resulting in poor drainage and flooded streets and yards.
With thousands of storm drains in the city, Citizens needs residents to clear the structures near their homes. According to city code, it is the responsibility of the property owners to clear debris from storm drains located on private property.
  • Check storm drain grates on your street to make sure they are free of leaves, debris and trash.
  • Rake leaves or grass clippings away from the storm drains near your house or business.
  • Dispose of pet waste in the trash can or toilet. Do not put waste in storm drains.
  • Make sure driveway culverts are free of debris, in good repair and set to proper elevation so that water can drain.
To report drainage issues caused by sewer and storm water, please call Citizens Water Dispatch at 631-1431.
