Citizens Honors Laura Brown with 2015 Jefferson Award

INDIANAPOLIS – Today Citizens Energy Group recognized its security officer, Laura Brown, as the 2015 Jefferson Awards Gold Medal recipient.  Laura is the eighth Jefferson Award winner to be named by Citizens. The Jefferson Award is the Nobel Prize for public service and aims to honor people who are looked upon as unsung heroes in their community.

Laura was chosen as the Jefferson Award recipient because of her work with IndyFeral, a community non-profit charged with caring for the city’s stray, dumped or feral cats. Every day, regardless of weather, Laura feeds approximately 100 feral cats downtown and on the south side of Indianapolis. In addition to providing food and water for the cats, Laura takes them to IndyFeral where they are vaccinated and spayed or neutered. Once the cats are treated, Laura releases them back to where they were found.
Feral cats are not considered strays because they are not socialized to live with people and cannot be adopted.  They are sometimes referred to as “alley cats” and are prone to inhabit the city’s alleyways in search of food and warmth.
Since 1999, Laura has volunteered approximately 520-hours each year with IndyFeral and considers herself a “foot soldier” when referring to her unyielding passion and commitment to caring for her furry friends. Thanks to volunteers like Laura, IndyFeral has performed more than 215,000 spay and neuter surgeries since opening in 1999. Spaying and neutering animals dramatically reduces pet over-population.

Citizens is a champion company for the Jefferson Awards. The champion program offers corporations and other organizations such as universities, local government, and non-profits, a turnkey system that rewards, honors and encourages community volunteerism.  Although many champion companies honor recipients throughout the year, Citizens only honors one award recipient at the beginning of each year.

Laura was chosen by the Jefferson Award Employee Volunteer Support Committee, and she will join other award recipients throughout the U.S. for a celebration in Washington, D.C. this June.
