Citizens Energy Group Nearing Supplier Diversity Goals

INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Energy Group is well on its way to achieving supplier diversity goals established when it acquired the community’s water and wastewater utilities nearly two years ago.

When Citizens acquired the water and wastewater systems in August 2011, it agreed to 15, 8 and 3 percent of addressable spending with minority, women and veteran owned suppliers (MBE/WBE/VBE) after three years of operating the combined utilities. Over the past year, the utility has recorded approximately $109 million in addressable spending with diverse suppliers. The spending breaks down as follows:

  • $57 million with minority suppliers, 13.9 percent of addressable spending
  • $43 million with women owned suppliers, 11.75 percent of addressable spending
  • $9 million with veteran owned suppliers, 2.6 percent of addressable spending

"We are proud of our supplier diversity program and know it has been a key factor in our successful integration of the community's water and wastewater utilities into the Citizens family of companies," said Carey Lykins, President & CEO of Citizens Energy Group. "Diversity is one of the core values of the public charitable trust. We believe our success depends on valuing diversity in our work force, business partners and communities."

Citizens is nearing its supplier diversity goals through a carefully planned program, explained Richard Wise, Supplier Diversity Administrator for Citizens. "Our supplier diversity program is successful because of a strong commitment from management and business partners, and the dedication of staff resources," Wise said. "While we are well on our way to achieving the goals set out in the utility transfer agreement, we are not satisfied. We expect to exceed these goals in the months ahead."

Wise added that a key to the success of Citizens supplier diversity program is ongoing supplier outreach in partnership with professional associations, including the Indiana Minority Supplier Development Council, Indiana Black Expo, Indiana Latino Expo, the Surety Association of Indiana, and the Historically Underutilized Small Business Coordinators. "The support of professional associations has been vital to the design of our supplier diversity program and to the success of ongoing supplier diversity outreach events meant to educate potential suppliers about Citizens. After all, building a diverse supplier network depends upon building relationships," Wise said.

"At Citizens, we know that achieving our supplier diversity goals is good for our business and for the health of the economy of Central Indiana," said Lykins.
