Citizens Donates CO Detectors to Indianapolis Housing Agency

Indianapolis— As colder temperatures continue to linger, Citizens Energy Group wants everyone to take precautions while heating their homes. Citizens and the Indianapolis Housing Agency (IHA) are partnering to give away 400 carbon monoxide (CO) detectors to Section 8 residents in Marion County.

“Each year, Citizens gives away smoke and CO detectors to customers and to the Indianapolis Fire Department,” said Carey Lykins, President and CEO of Citizens Energy Group. “This year, however, we found ourselves with an abundance of CO detectors and we want to make sure they’re put to good use.”

On Wednesday, Citizens will donate the detectors to IHA to be distributed to landlords who have Section 8 tenants. Landlords will be able to log onto the IHA’s Landlord Partner Portal in order to request the detectors.

“Approximately 7,500 tenants in Marion County live in Section 8 Housing,” said Valarie Calhoun, IHA Deputy Executive Director of Housing Programs. “IHA is happy to accept this donation from Citizens as it better protects these tenants and their families.”

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless and poisonous gas that kills hundreds of people every year nationwide and sends an estimated 10,000 people to the hospital. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, vomiting, and confusion. The detectors should meet requirements of the International Approval Services Standard. Alarms can be recognized by the blue star, AGA (American Gas Association) design on the package. If you suspect carbon monoxide, get fresh air and call 911.
