Area Reservoirs Now Full Thanks to Conservation and Steady Rain

INDIANPOLIS- Citizens Energy Group reported today that Morse, Geist and Eagle Creek Reservoirs are now full and underground aquifers are recharged.

"In addition to regular rainfall, conservation by customers this past summer played an important role in recharging our water resources," said Carey Lykins, President & CEO of Citizens Energy Group. "We greatly appreciate the cooperation we saw this past summer during the 59-day ban on lawn watering. Without this cooperation, our water resources would not be where they are today."

The summer’s drought, the worst since 1988, caused water levels at Morse, Geist, and Eagle Creek Reservoirs to drop significantly. By early July, Morse Reservoir fell more than 6-feet or 50 percent of its drawdown capacity. Meanwhile, Geist fell more than two feet and Eagle Creek more than three feet. Ground water levels also fell significantly. As a result, on July 13, Citizens asked Mayor Greg Ballard to declare a water shortage warning in order to ban lawn watering and put mandatory restrictions on outdoor water use.
In early September, due to heavy rainfall and conservation efforts, Citizens and Mayor Ballard agreed to lift the mandatory water ban. After water use restrictions were lifted, Citizens asked customers to voluntarily limit lawn watering to once per week. Customers responded to the request and water use remained low throughout the fall.

"During the watering ban, Citizens estimates approximately three billion gallons of water were saved. This savings would not have been possible if it weren’t for the conservation efforts put forth by our customers,” said Lykins.
