Evaluating Residuals for Potential Reuse

The process of taking raw water, whether surface water or groundwater, and treating it generates process by-products.

An IUPUI Center for Earth and Environmental Science student studied the chemical and physical composition of by-products from Citizens’ Perry K Steam Plant and the White River Water Treatment Plant, which use similar treatment processes.

The study compared composition of by-products from both plants to understand the potential of sustainable reuse. He used X-ray diffraction analysis and concluded there is potential to reuse the water treatment plant by-products.
