Preparing For the Storm

1/3/2014

INDIANAPOLIS- Citizens Energy Group urges customers to prepare for freezing temperatures and increased snowfall throughout the weekend. By taking time to put simple tips into practice, you can safeguard your home.

Safely Heat Your Home

  • No customers should be without heat. If you’re having trouble paying your bill, please call us at 924-3311 to discuss flexible payment arrangements or financial assistance.
  • If using a space heater, keep it away from flammable items like furniture and draperies. Avoid using fuel burning space heaters indoors as they can create deadly carbon monoxide.
  • Everyone should have a working smoke alarm on each level of their home and at least one carbon monoxide alarm in their home. Batteries should be checked monthly.

Avoid Frozen Pipes

  • Leave a stream of water trickling in at least one sink in your home.
  • Insulate pipes that may be exposed to cold air.
  • Make sure the lid on your water meter pit is tightly secured.
  • Open cabinet doors below sinks to keep warm air circulating around pipes.

Citizens is doing its part to prepare for a potential increase in water main breaks. Crews will be on standby all weekend, ready to respond in the event freezing temperatures cause water mains to break. To report a water main break, customers are asked to call Citizens at 924-3311.

“The safety of our customers is our number one priority at Citizens,” said Carey Lykins, President and CEO of Citizens Energy Group. “Taking the time to safeguard your home today can prevent serious problems from occurring at the height of the storm.”
