Citizens and Indy Parks Give City Park a Fresh Look

1/15/2014

INDIANAPOLIS: Tomorrow and Friday, more than 200 Citizens Energy Group employees will partner with Indy Parks, the Indianapolis Parks Foundation, Marksmen Construction Services and Mitsch Design to restore Thatcher Park during Citizens’ sixth annual Sharing the Dream event in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Thatcher Park and Family Center is located on the near west side of Indianapolis. The park has been home to a junior basketball league and tee-ball league for many years, and offers a large gymnasium and community center for recreational activities and meetings.

“We truly appreciate our partners at Citizens for their continuous contributions and all the terrific volunteers for supporting the My City, My Park initiative,” said Indy Parks Director John Williams. “My City, My Park connects businesses and community organizations with Indy Parks, and Citizens' annual Sharing the Dream event plays an integral role in efforts to create and sustain engaging public park spaces.”

Prior to the arrival of Citizens volunteers for the Sharing the Dream revitalization, Marksmen Construction Services and Mitsch Designs donated their services by updating the park’s gymnasium and creating three meeting rooms in the park’s community center.  These rooms will be available as leasable space for birthday parties and neighborhood gatherings. Over the next two days, Citizens and Indy Parks volunteers will finish those rooms by painting and hanging TVs and dry erase boards in them. The park’s kitchen will also be given an updated look with new countertops, a stove, refrigerator, microwave and freshly painted cabinets.

“Giving back to the community is something on which Citizens employees pride themselves,” said Carey Lykins, President and CEO of Citizens Energy Group. “Taking part in our sixth annual Sharing the Dream gives us a chance to not only give back, but also partner with the City to honor the philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as we celebrate his birthday.” ”
