Citizens uses a significant amount of water to manage the needs of our customers. This "water balance" project will identify viable options to pursue internal recycling of water or to eliminate discharges (“zero liquid discharge”) in order to enhance efficiency of water use in processes.

A UIndy student is working in collaboration with Citizens’ steam and chilled water facility personnel to create a one-line water balance diagram that identifies water streams and their ultimate disposition.

This water balance diagram will include identification and volume estimations, of influent flows and the sources, make-up sources, distribution to customers, effluent discharges to sanitary sewers, effluent discharges to regulated NPDES outfalls, and estimated process losses.
