Geist Quarry Reservoir Power Study

As Citizens prepares to increase its water storage capacity through the newly purchased Geist Quarry, in the Fall of 2017 IUPUI electrical engineering students designed and analyzed a potential electrical and communications layout, based on the mechanical design.

The students’ plan included nine deliverables, including power schematics, generator options, switchgear design, measurement instrumentation and controls, and operations and maintenance cost evaluations. The students learned about the importance of various control instrumentation and backup power and communication.

During the Spring 2018 semester the students will focus on building a working model to illustrate how to control parallel variable output pumps, parallel modulating intake gates, continuous control of flow, remote monitoring, and remote control. The challenge is to make the system functional, compact, portable, and affordable.
