State Moratorium on Service Disconnection Ends Today

Customers Behind on Bills Are Urged to Call Utility

INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Gas wants to remind customers that today is the end of the regulatory moratorium on service disconnections of customers who are currently receiving financial assistance from the Indiana Energy Assistance Program. Customers who are behind on their gas bills are urged to contact Citizens at 924-3311 for information on possible energy assistance and flexible payment assistance.

“Citizens always works to minimize the number of disconnections, especially in light of today’s difficult economy. We urge our customers needing help to call us so we can provide information about eligibility for flexible payment arrangements, as well as a variety of energy assistance sources still available,” said Greg Sawyers, Director of Customer Services for Citizens Gas.

Customers can also receive information about energy assistance through Community Action of Greater Indianapolis at 524-6966 or through their local township trustee’s office.

Citizens Gas also urges customers to be very careful using any kind of space heater. Homeowners should be sure to have one or more working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on each level of their home and periodically check the batteries.

By March 30, the company expects about 30,000 Citizens Gas customers will have received more than $9.5 million in energy assistance this winter from state, city and company-sponsored programs. Included in this assistance is the utility’s Universal Service Program (USP), which automatically provides 10-25 percent bill discounts to low-income customers who qualify for the Indiana Energy Assistance Program (EAP).
