Technical Experience

Onsite Utility Systems:
Citizens operates a wide array of on-site utility systems for our customers, including steam, hot water, chilled water, electric generation, compressed air, industrial gases, purified water, waste water treatment, building management, utility management, maintenance management, continuous emission monitoring, boiler control systems and SCADA systems.

District Steam System:
Citizens Thermal operates the second largest district steam system in the United States. Utilizing coal, natural gas and oil, our 8 boilers produce about 2 million pounds per hour of steam that is transported to 220 customers via more than 20 miles of high pressure piping. Our annual district steam sales total about 72 million therms.

District Chilled Water System:
Citizens Thermal operates one of the nation’s fastest growing district chilled water districts with more than 15 miles of piping connected to more than 30 large customers. Our 26 chillers currently can produce up to 75,000 tons of cooling. Annual chilled water sales total about 168 million ton hours.

Natural Gas Distribution:
Citizens Gas provides natural gas service to about 266,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in the Indianapolis area. Our gas system includes more than 4,000 miles of lower-pressure gas distribution lines and more than 70 miles of high pressure gas transmission lines. Citizens operates an underground gas storage system with 7 Bcf capacity and two liquefied gas storage terminals with a combined 2 Bcf capacity.

Major Construction Projects:
Citizens has considerable experience with various utility and energy-related construction projects including:

  • Chiller Water Plants – Approximately 75,000 tons of chilled water production capacity has been developed by Citizens at five separate plant sites.
  • Thermal Energy Distribution – Recently completed a half-mile, $30 million pipeline project to deliver hot water and chilled water service to the new Indianapolis International Airport’s Midfield Terminal.
  • Natural Gas Pipeline – Completed a 25-mile natural gas pipeline in Central Indiana in November 2005 to access affordable gas supplies from the Western U.S. and Canada.
