Sharing the Dream

For the second year, Citizens employees have celebrated the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by participating in a company-wide opportunity to rehabilitate an Indy Parks building. In 2009 close to 200 employees contributed to the beautification of the Brookside Park Family Recreation Center. The Center needed the work of skilled craftsmen to bring the building into compliance with the various safety codes of the City. It also needed significant cleaning and attention to architectural detail provided through paint colors reminiscent of the 1930’s era.

With the success of our work and appreciation of Indy Parks, Mayor Ballard and neighborhood residents surrounding the Park encouraged us to seek another Indy Parks facility for rehabilitation in 2010.

Even with fewer 2010 corporate volunteers, Citizens took on the task of revitalizing two parks buildings on January 14 and 15. The MLK Park pool bath house was in dire need of a complete beautification, but was not large enough to accommodate all Citizens volunteers. Nonetheless, MLK Park bath house was selected and we added the small community building at Pride Park, on the near southeast side of Indianapolis. The one-room Pride Park building was a complete rehab; new roof, ceiling, windows, doors, flooring, and kitchen.

The MLK Park bath house now brings added safety, a bit of privacy, and bright, playful ocean colors and shapes to a formerly uninviting dressing, shower and restroom area.Citizens employee volunteers even look forward to opening day at the pool this year!

The Pride Park Center was revitalized from top to bottom. New flooring, paint and ceiling were complimented by a totally new kitchen area, complete with new dishwasher. Youth, teen and seniors programs will be much more comfortable in the years ahead!
